Here are some photos of what my recent show at Lyndon State College's Quimby Gallery looks like. Thanks to Barclay Tucker for taking them and passing them along.

Each painting is accompanied by a print out of a sketchbook page that contains the genesis of the idea for the painting in it's original context

A HS Math Teacher Drove Me To Art

I have had a long troubled relationship with mathematics. I had my share of math teachers whose expiration dates were long past due and the result was a quickening of the pulse and hives when confronted with any problem dealing with time and distance and what would happen if Timmy left 20 minutes later than Sally but was travelling on his bike. This stuff would kill me. But it does provide for some pretty good material. Here are are a couple of personal paintings along these lines and owing from the response they've received when I've shown them, I get the feeling there is a huge untapped mathphobe market out there.

The Arthop in Burlington has become the premier art event in Vermont with over 500 artists showing at 200 venues throughout Burlington's old South End. I happened to grow up right around the corner from this, so I always look forward to this event.

This year sculptor John Brickels asked me to show my work in his gallery/studio and I jumped at the opportunity. I had met John a couple of times in passing at various art openings, but didn't know him very well. I certainly knew his work which I admired for it's sense of humor and craftsmanship. Last April during my residency at the Vermont Studio Center, in Johnson, Vt, John and his wife, painter Wendy James, happened to have a studio right across the hall from my studio we were able to hang out for an extended period of time. Getting to know John was like meeting a long lost brother. Albeit a long lost brother who is very sarcastic.

I think John's claymobiles are particularly cool. He scours EBay for old pedal car bodies and tricks them out with suspensions and hemis, all in clay. He completed the presentation of '41 Chrysler by including a bag of oregano in the open glove compartment. Nice touch. Here's what his work looks like. Check out more at his site.

Drawn from Vermont: The Cartoon Show

It just might be the drinking water. Vermont probably has more cartoonists per capita than any other state in the Union. I am honored to be a part of this show that features some of Vermont's best. I've never met Jeff Danziger (I think he now lives in Chicago), but I see Ed Koren and Tim Newcomb from time to time and always enjoy our conversations. The opening tomorrow night promises to be quite an event. When I was initially approached about this show, the curator, Joyce Mandeville wanted to show strictly cartoons, but I cajoled her into letting me show my paintings, which technically aren't cartoons, but have a certain humorous sensibility that is in line with the spirit of the show. The gallery is huge, so they were able to hang 32 of my paintings. Here's a sample of some of my more recent grid paintings.

Here are some personal watercolors that I've been working in around assignments and painting in acrylic. Several weeks ago I was notified of my acceptance at the Vermont Studio Center, an artist's retreat in Johnson, Vermont for the last week in April. I'll be given studio space and room and board for a nominal fee. I had every intention of painting in acrylic for a week, but lately I've been hankering for some extended time with watercolor. About a decade ago I was showing at a gallery on the Cape when Robert Motherwell died. His widow came by the gallery with his handmade watercolor paper and asked that it be distributed amoung the artists showing at the gallery. I received about 15 sheets of the master's paper and have been petrified to use it ever since. It seems to me that this might be a good a time as ever to suck it up and apply some paint.

For the past several years I've been limping along with a website that was a sprawling mess. I never seemed to have the time to redesign it, I just kept adding onto it. Most of the work was outdated in a format that at the time was all I could muster with my cursory knowledge of Dreamweaver. Updates were a chore and I always put them off in favor of making art.

So, armed with the energy and new found sense of purpose that only the holidays can muster, I gave Zimm a call and started experimenting with the website templates that he had begun offering. Like Illoz and Illogator, it's clean and extremely easy to update and tweak. We ran into several minor bugs, but on a whole, the process was a piece of cake.Check it out. Hope you dig it. Thanks, Zimm.

In an unrelated note, I still have calendars available. This years calendar is a bit differernt in that I experienced a massive computer failure in November, when I am normally doing the illos for my calendar and was forced to go with scans that I already had in my machine. So this year's edition (my 29th) features some of my greatest hits in acrylics. If you'd like one, lemme know.

Prints of most of these paintings are available at Illogator.
